#RBMU Spotlight: Featuring @Poster_Children + @virgilabloh + @dannacoppafeel

This post is a feature focused on a few creatives from the Illinois side of the area under our River Bend Musicians Unite monicker. It features indie rock band Poster Children, producer & designer Virgil Abloh, plus  Danna Coppafeel.

POSTER CHILDREN SHARE MUSIC VIDEO FOR "GRAND BARGAIN!" AND ANNOUNCE SUMMER TOUR DATES

NEW ALBUM GRAND BARGAIN! AVAILABLE MAY 18

WATCH VIDEO HERE

"Ferocious"

- David Peisner, New York Times

Poster Children returned earlier this year with the politically charged track "Grand Bargain!", announcing a new album to come in spring. The album, of the same name, will be available on May 18 via Lotuspool Records. Today they share the new music video for the "Grand Bargain!" and announce upcoming summer tour dates to follow the album release. In the video, a child posing as Donald Trump plays out many of the President's heavily publicized moments, which include lots of tweeting, eating fast food, and the infamous "Trump Drinks Water" moment during a speech on national security.

Poster Children originally formed in Champaign, Illinois in 1987 by Rick Valentin (guitar, vocals) and Rose Marshack (bass, vocals). Jim Valentin joined on guitar in 1991 and Matt Friscia (drummer #7) joined in 2001. They have released eleven studio albums, on various independent and major labels, and one feature-length film, "Zero Stars". Known for their strong DIY ethic, the band members toured incessantly in the 1990s, driving their own van around the US and Europe, creating their own artwork and T-shirt designs, and operating their own record label. Poster Children were also pioneers in several forms of electronic technology relating to performance art, including enhanced CDs, webcasts, and blogs.

America held hostage day one

A lot of folks woke up without power this morning

It's every man for himself

And every woman at 70% of the going rate

Vision, creativity, and destiny materialize as an unlikely collaboration between emerging acts from across the Atlantic

Innocence RMX marks an international voyage from the Mid-West to the Mid-Atlantic; crossing borders and musical genres and uniting local top musical talents in an uplifting collaboration remix.

Innocence, the soulful and most popular track from Kiriyama’s latest album was remixed into a spirited EDM beat by Charley Cooks (Milwaukee’s premier producer). With inspiring and unrelenting lyrics from Dana and Vince, the track is three minutes of power.
This collaboration reveals many natural synergies between the two localities aside from ice and snow. When you think of Milwaukee; perhaps you’ll think of beer, cheese, and motorcycles. When you think of Iceland; it’s likely you’ll think vikings, volcanoes, tourism… and of course Bjork. But mention that either of these places are hotbeds of killer indie music or hip hop and you’re likely to get raised eyebrows.  Despite this lack of recognition, both Reykjavik and Milwaukee have established and unique music scenes and should surely be on the radar for any music fan who thrives on emerging music discovery.
Further, the artists that make up this collaboration are locally recognized as the best in their respective genres:

Kiriyama Family’s latest album “Waiting For…” was nominated for top pop album in Iceland and the band has had five songs hold at #1 on Icelandic music charts and have been featured in many European publications

Dana has been featured on well known publications like The Source, Rolling Stone and Huffington Post and has collaborated or performed with notables such as Wu Tang, Riff Raff, and Action Bronson.

Vince has won multiple emerging artist awards, been featured on The Source, the Eric Andre Comedy Tour, and has performed with Ludacris, Lupe Fiasco, and Public Enemy.

All three are releasing new albums in 2018.  Let Innocence RMX be your entrée to what the best artists from these two unknown music hotbeds have to offer and be part of the momentum.

Growing up in the small town of Murphysboro, Ill, not too far from where the Ohio and Mississippi rivers meet, Brent Stewart was always a fan of songwriters. His first cassettes as a kid were Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. When he was twelve, he bought his first Bob Dylan album. That’s when things changed. He’s been writing and performing his own songs ever since.  Brent began playing his first shows alone with acoustic guitar and harmonica at 15. At 16, he recorded his first album, a cassette-only release. At 17, he formed his first band, The Sympathizers, with whom he recorded four out of print records, the best of which is featured on a recently released compilation, Songs You Never Heard. Through the years, Brent has been a journalist and writer, but has never strayed too far from his songs. Now living in St. Louis, he’s still writing and performing his original music regularly. In 2017 he released two new albums, The Restlessness, recorded with The Sympathizers and Haze, an acoustic album recorded with guitarist Daniel Tejada.

*yndi halda announces North American tour*     * dates & new EP, A Sun-Coloured Shaker *

- STREAM: "A Sun-Coloured Shaker" -
SoundCloud

yndi halda released their brand new EP, A Sun-Coloured Shaker through Big Scary Monsters (UK) and Burnt Toast Vinyl (USA) on February 16th 2018 (order it here). The band is touring North America in Feb. & March to support it. Marking both a thematic accompaniment and a follow-up to their acclaimed 2016 full-length Under Summer, the new EP explores new musical and lyrical ideas, and represents a band continuing to progress their own maturing and developing songwriting.

While yndi halda have previously worn the mantles of “instrumental” and “post-rock” music - especially with their 2006 debut Enjoy Eternal Bliss - their recent movements have occupied considerably broader territories. The closely-crafted vocal harmonies and new musicalities of Under Summer have been continued in A Sun-Coloured Shaker, but their form is now embedded into a symbiotic world in which a love of true songwriting, meticulous post-classical arrangement, contemporary indie, choral music, and transcendent longform structure coexist. The band themselves reference inspirations as unexpected as Alice Coltrane, Akira Rabelais and Lonnie Liston Smith, whose influences subtly intertwine with more immediate comparison points.

Like a terrible comet coming to hit the earth, and writing a list of things you would save firstruns the repeated, principal lyric in the piece’s would-be chorus. yndi halda can be well characterised by this line: their music is of sadness, lament, sorrow, but also full of light and ablution, delivered with joyousness.

The band - now augmented to a six-piece, split in half between the UK’s South-East and South-West coasts following relocations - write:

"As we completed our last album Under Summer - having spent 9 years slowly chipping away at the composition, arrangements, production - we found that we were left with small pockets of music that we really loved, but had no home for. One piece in particular felt so attached to the rest of the LP, so much a real part of it, but was nowhere near completion even by the time we had finished working on Under Summer. We knew it had to be a part of the album eventually, but also that it needed more time. So, between tours and obligations for Under Summer, we met to continue writing, and we eventually reached our destination: an accompaniment to the album, a new song that tells the leftover stories."

"We see A Sun-Coloured Shaker as the passing of night that follows Under Summer’s day. The dawn after the album’s dusk has faded. We wanted to express the realisation that something as simple and everyday as sunrise can be so truly life-giving. That the natural rhythm of nightfall and daybreak is a foundation of reality and being."

"We recorded the EP in a handful of locations, just like the album, but primarily in a beautiful rural studio named Deep Litter, located deep in the Cornish countryside. It felt like a return to the barn of our first formation and first album recording (though Deep Litter is converted and fully equipped; for Enjoy Eternal Bliss we had to bring in a very rudimentary mobile rig). This is the first yndi halda record to feature the band’s new lineup. We now have four singers in the group, as well as keyboard / sound-design, as new members Simon Hampshire (bass guitar, vocals) and Phil Self (keyboard, synth, vocals) join the band."

A Sun-Coloured Shaker is released on one-sided, sun-coloured 12” with original artwork and b-side etching created by the band’s frequent collaborator, illustrator Hannah Clare.

#RBMU Spotlight On #DavidForaker - The Blues Fiddler

Blues fiddler Dave Foraker is a truly unique solo performer. You can find him sitting at the piano, telling stories, singing blues and standards at a piano bar or at an assisted-living  center. Maybe you might  see him with his "funky-white fiddle" along with a soulful voice working with some of Alton, Illinois' top musicians.

"Foraker's soulful voice, to me, reflects Ray Charles, Joe Cocker and Gregg Allman. His "funky-white fiddle" mimics the style of the late Albert King."
- Occasionally Bluesletter

"In his 19 seasons of entertaining at the Biltmore Estate, Dave has proven to be a reliable and quite a crowd-pleaser."

You can send you favorite anonymously by email to the address listed at the bottom of this article and by messaging the fan page on Facebook or the Twitter account if you prefer. You can post your comment HERE on this Facebook thread. Whatever is clever. It does not matter if your favorite album, single, etc. is in one of the new releases posts below. What does matter is that it came out this year from a original music artist in 2017 from either the state of Missouri or from the Southern/Central areas of the state of Illinois. Even if they are natives to the area and do not currently reside in the vicinity. After the deadline the results will be gathered and a post will be published with the results on all of your favorites.

Note: From January to June of this year the initial format of new music posts here were combined using Bandcamp, SoundCloud and then YouTube together. Over time, artist, venue and media exclusives were also introduced. Due to increased volume, the releases had to be divided into three different post formats to accommodate. The idea has been to try and cover the state of Missouri and onto the Southern and Central parts of Illinois where possible.

The = symbol denotes a YouTube releases post with artist, venue & media exclusives.

The + symbol denotes a Bandcamp new releases post.

The x symbol denotes a SoundCloud new releases post.

The < symbol denotes a combined post of new music using multiple sites.

Penguin Party: @SarahSchonert - New Album Out Fri.12/8 (Peoria, IL)

Sarah Schonert (Peoria, IL) combines classical-sounding piano with ambient washes, vocoded synths, electronic elements, and layered vocals, and she is not afraid to experiment with vintage instruments as well as new technology to create her sound. From what was heard by listening to her newest release "Penguin Party" it can be said that it's quite engaging. The sophistication of Sarah's craft and style create a mood and energy rarely experienced.

"For "Penguin Party," I chose to stick to the keyboards and loopers to focus on creative a more energetic album that people would want to move to. It also gave me a chance to experiment with some new ideas, such as using vocoder to make a drum track drive a bassline, looping live, and extravagant piano ornaments."

The artwork for Penguin Party features photography by Brian Rowe (argentography.com), taken on film using vintage cameras to counter Sarah's digital sound.

- Visit her Bandcamp pre-order link to stream her current public tracks and to purchase her new music in CD format or in digital format.

Press Quotes:

"Sarah Schonert creates music that is gorgeous from every angle." - Paste Magazine

"Sarah continues pushing her creative boundaries with an interesting and unique mix of piano-based, vocoder infused, ambient, avant-garde pop." - Middle Tennessee Music.com

- (Both quotes are from the release of "My Unwinding State" in summer 2016).

Accolades:

Won the 2016 Women in Charg3 Music Award for best album with "My Unwinding State".

Artist Biography:

Sarah Schonert is a Creative, writing, recording, and producing original pieces out of her home studio in Peoria, IL and coming out with her third LP, "Penguin Party." Her second LP, "My Unwinding State" has garnered over a dozen reviews/interviews/features and an award, and hasn't slowed down, releasing two instrumental albums between LPs.

Sarah is a multi-instrumentalist and singer that loves her gear and software. Her style is rooted in classical piano, supported by electronic vsts, loopers, ambient washes, carefully crafted arps, and assorted instruments she has collected over the years. Her sound is eclectic, ethereal, dreamy, haunting, and unexpected.

When gigging around Peoria, Sarah has been adding loopers and vocalizers to her set, creating an otherworldy live music experience.
