About Nikki Lane:
Nikki Lane’s stunning third albumHighway Queen, out February 17th, 2017,sees the young Nashville singer emerge as one of country and rock’s most gifted songwriters. Co-produced by Lane and fellow singer-songwriter, Jonathan Tyler, this emotional tour-de-force was recorded at Matt Pence’s Echo Lab studio in Denton, Texas as well as at Club Roar with Collin Dupuis in Nashville, Tennessee. Blending potent lyrics, unbridled blues guitars and vintage Sixties country-pop swagger, Lane’s new music will resonate as easily with Lana Del Rey and Jenny Lewis fans as those of Neil Young and Tom Petty.

Highway Queen is a journey through heartbreak that takes exquisite turns. The record begins with a whiskey-soaked homage to Lane’s hometown (“700,000 Rednecks”) and ends on the profoundly raw “Forever Lasts Forever,” where Lane mourns a failed marriage – the “lighter shade of skin” left behind from her wedding ring. On “Forever” and the confessional “Muddy Waters,” Lane’s lyrics align her with perceptive songwriters like Nick Lowe and Cass McCombs. Elsewhere, “Companion” is pure Everly Brothers’ dreaminess (“I would spend a lifetime/ Playing catch you if I can”). She goes on a Vegas bender on the rollicking “Jackpot,” fights last-call blues (“Foolish Heart”) and tosses off brazen one-liners at a backroom piano (“Big Mouth”).

“Love is the most unavoidable thing in the world,” Lane says. “The person you pick could be half set-up to destroy your life with their own habits – I’ve certainly experienced that before and taken way too long to get out of that mistake.”

In 2014, Lane’s second album All or Nothin’ (New West) solidified her sandpaper voice beneath a ten-gallon hat as the new sound and look of outlaw country music. Produced by Dan Auerbach, the record’s bluesy Western guitars paired with Lane’s Dusty Springfield-esque voice earned glowing reviews from NPR, the Guardian and Rolling Stone. In three years since herWalk of Shame debut, Lane said she was living most of the year on the road.

Growing up, Lane used to watch her father pave asphalt during blistering South Carolina summers. She’d sit on the roller (“what helps smooth out the asphalt”) next to a guy named Rooster and divvy out Hardee’s lunch orders for the workers. “My father thought he was a country singer,” Lane laughs. “He partied hard at night, but by 6:30 AM he was out on the roads in 100-degree weather.” That’s the southern work ethic, she says. “We didn’t have a lot of money, but I was privileged with the knowledge of how to work hard, how to learn and to succeed when things aren’t set up for me.” Creativity was an unthinkable luxury, she adds. “When people told me I should try to get a record deal for songs I was writing, I was like, ‘that’s cute – I’ve got to be at work at 10 A.M.’”

“Becoming a songwriter is one of the most selfish things I’ve ever done,” Lane says plainly. She describes writing her first song at age 25 like it was a necessary act of self-preservation after a devastating breakup. Many of her early songs, she said on Shame and Nothin’,were about the fleetingness of relationships she believed were permanent, she says. Lane’s main line of work in those days was a fashion entrepreneur (she’s currently the owner of Nashville’s vintage clothing boutique High Class Hillbilly). It brought her to cities around the country, New York to Los Angeles to Nashville. And like a true wanderer, Lane’s sound crisscrosses musical genres with ease, while the lonesome romantic in her remains. Even a soft song like, “Send The Sun,” with its lilting downward strum, is flush with bittersweet emotion. “Darling, we’re staring at the same moon,” Lane sings lovingly. “I used to say that to my ex,” she says with cheerful stoicism, “to try to brighten the long nights, stay positive.”

Highway Queen is poised to be Lane’s mainstream breakthrough. “Am I excited to spend years of my life in a van, away from family and friends? No, but I’m excited to share my songs, so they’ll reach people and help them get through whatever they’re going through. To me, that’s worth it.”

“Lay You Down” is one of those unexpected moments for Lane. “That song was inspired by something Levon Helm’s wife posted on Facebook when he was sick with cancer,” Lane says. “I was just so moved by her telling the world how much love he felt from people writing to them, and moved that because of the Internet, I was able to see that love – even from a distance.” The song became surreal for Lane and her band when her longtime guitarist, Alex Munoz, was diagnosed with cancer while they were playing it. “It deepened my perspective and the importance of keeping everyone safe,” says Lane.

On the record cover, Lane looks out on wide, unowned Texan plains, leaning on the fearsome horns of a massive steer. Wearing a vintage Victorian dress, the stark photo invokes a time before highways existed. The symbolism isn’t lost on Lane. Highway Queen was a pioneering moment for her as an artist.

“I was always a smart girl, always had to yell to be heard,” she says, “But this was the first time in my career where I decided how things were going to go; I was willing to take the heat.” Lane included the bonus track “Champion” as a small testament to that empowerment. “It makes a point,” Lane says with a smile, “That I appreciate what you’re saying, but get the fuck out of my way.”

"An album that uses the richness of the American musical catalog

The run included appearances at Shaky Knees Music Festival in Atlanta, GA, Boston Calling Festival in Boston, MA and Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati, OH. Last year's Forever And Then Some received a great deal of advance praise leading up to its release. Rolling Stone praised "Over The Hill And Through The Woods" for "melding unique old-time vocal breaks, a rich sonic chug that evokes some Seventies rock psychedelia and evocative storytelling;" Stereogum lauded "Honky Tonks And Taverns" as "an expertly polished, delightfully upbeat track;" and Elle noted that the album is "filled with songs that showcase her songwriting talent, blending pop heartbreak with country joy -- kind of like if Robyn spent some quality time with Willie Nelson." Lillie Mae also recently performed on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert -- watch the performance HERE.

About Jack Grelle:

“A progressive honky-tonk hero arriving at just the right time in Trump’s America”- Rolling Stone

“Got Dressed Up to be Let Down,” the new album out October 2016 from St. Louis-based country songwriter Jack Grelle (Grell-EE), paints the picture of true Americana with depth and variety. Largely sculpted by 70s honky-tonk, the album weaves through diverse influences such as cajun, tejano, rock & roll and folk to create a passionately comprehensive interpretation of a classic sound. The songs are carefully crafted with contributions from an assortment of musicians including the South City Three (Pokey LaFarge) and John Horton (The Bottle Rockets). The arrangements include pedal steel, piano, fiddle and harmonica.

Jack’s willingness to travel around genre-lines is a testament to the urgency and restlessness of his artistry. This rambling spirit has brought him to over 13 countries and 3 continents with a tour schedule that averages 150 shows a year. He has shared the stage with Joe Ely, Billy Joe Shaver, Chris Stapleton, and Pokey Lafarge. LaFarge, who has personally invited Grelle to open shows on numerous occasions, referred to Jack as a “Midwestern poet” and “a timeless Renaissance man.” Jack has also enjoyed the opportunity to sit in with Dale Watson and his Lonestars.

As Grelle’s new album switches from waltzes to two-steps and rockers, the insight and intelligence in his lyrics remain consistent. Jack’s songs range in topic from celebrating the life of his recently-deceased grandmother to romance in South America, and he shows an integrity and courage that mirror his punk rock upbringing by tackling such topics as freedom in femininity and the tragedy of police killings that plague the African-American community.

Jack is a strong, idealistic artist who does not accept limitations. These qualities recently led him to step outside of his normal role as he assembled a backing band to tour the Midwest with Lavender Country, the music of Patrick Haggerty, a life-long gay rights activist who made the world’s first gay country album. Grelle’s drive continually leads him to new challenges, and he consistently exceeds expectations. With a strong new album and another long stretch of tour dates lining up, Grelle is poised for new horizons and great success in 2016 and beyond.

“Music In My Mind” New CD

Listen on Soundcloud

Accompanied by his New Tomorrow band plus special guests, saxophonist Shawn Maxwell presents captivating original tunes on his latest release,Music In My Mind

Chicago-based reed maven Shawn Maxwell
takes listeners on a jazz journey with his brand-new CD, Music In My Mind

On Music In My Mind, saxophonist/clarinetist/flutist Shawn Maxwell presents an exciting mix of 10 new compositions, ranging from straight-ahead jazz to the free and far out to funk and fusion, all rendered with skill, taste, warmth and originality. This is the eighth album of originals for Maxwell, and once again he displays the talent, creativity and imagination that have built an enthusiastic international audience for this Illinois native son.
Joined by his band New Tomorrow on this latest CD, Music In My Mind,Maxwell presents an excellent sampler of his far-reaching capabilities as a bandleader, and highlights the stellar contributions of his musical cohorts. The saxophonist/clarinetist/flutist is joined by New Tomorrow stalwarts Victor Garcia on trumpet and flugelhorn, Matt Nelson on piano and keyboards, Junius Paul on acoustic and electric bass, and Phil Beale on drums.

The core New Tomorrow band is supplemented on this fresh offering by special guests, including vocalist Dee Alexander, trumpeters Chad McCullough and Corey Wilkes, electric bassists Patrick Mulcahy and Tim Seisser, vibraphonist Stephen Lynerd, and drummer/percussionist Kalyan Pathak.

The Joliet, Illinois-born Shawn Maxwell was exposed to a wide variety of music from his youngest years; he recalls that hearing Pete Fountain made him want to play the clarinet. It was love at first note—as soon as Shawn picked up an instrument, he knew he wanted to pursue a life in music. As he discovered more about jazz in high school, he realized he’d found his musical home.

Maxwell has been a mainstay of the Chicago jazz scene since his high school days. Critic Neil Tesser has described his tone in glowing terms: "His alto timbre sits in a lineage exemplified by past giants like Jackie McLean and Eric Dolphy, and by such latter-day players as Arthur Blythe and Steve Slagle."

But Maxwell can’t be pigeonholed as solely a Chicago musician. The saxophonist has steadily developed a broad following far beyond his Midwest roots, starting with the release of his first album in 2004. He maintains a busy national and international touring schedule, and has gigged and recorded with a quartet and a 10-tet, Shawn Maxwell’s Alliance, as well as with New Tomorrow.

Maxwell has been lauded for his composing skills from the get-go, and he acknowledges finding inspiration in a diverse lineup that includes Guns N’ Roses, Duke Ellington, Art Pepper and Cannonball Adderley. Writing music always seemed like a natural creative outlet to the saxophonist, who notes, “As jazz musicians, we’re composers every time we take a solo.”

Music In My Mind highlights include:

“He Gone”: Introspective and mellow, grounded by the spare, intense drumwork and ethereal flute.
“Our Princess is in Another Castle” is frisky and engaging, with a hypnotic beat. It’s a treat to hear how singer Dee Alexander shines in this setting.

The title track, “Music In My Mind,” bursts with fun and creativity, hinting at classically inspired themes. Check out the leader’s exciting saxophone work, as well as Victor Garcia’s shimmering flugelhorn solo.

With its brilliant writing, sax styling and energy, there’s something about “Glamasue” that evokes but never imitates Arthur Blythe on the cusp of the 1980s. There’s an engaging development of tension and tempo, driven by the depth of Tim Seisser’s electric bass.

With Music In My Mind Shawn Maxwell proves once again that he is in the front line among today’s most versatile and creative jazz talents. Expect to be surprised and delighted by his music for years to come.

LA rockers The MÆNSION Premiere new music video "Say It" on Pure Grain Audio.com

The video, from The Maension's upcoming RÆVOLUTION release, depicts the band as a group of hackers who successfully hack into a worldwide media system to spread The Maension's RÆVOLUTION message using the hashtags #THEMAENSION #RÆVOLUTION (searchable on all social media sites).

The video has a relevance that extends far beyond music in light of today's troubling new reports of data breaches. "The gap between the average Joe and the 0.1% keeps increasing, said Mark Maension. "Our privacy has been taken away, our rights slowly eroded by laws passed using fear generated by fake news and fake wars. Meanwhile politicians on both sides keep lining their pockets with campaign funds instead of representing 'We the People.'"

The Maension, the Hollywood-based heavy metal band has never shied away from confronting issues, but with this album, the band chose to hit them head-on.

The MÆNSION "Say It" official music

"Lyrically I had a very clear direction for this album," Mark said. "In the past I was quite cryptic and psychedelic with my lyrics, but I wanted to go the opposite direction for this one and be as direct and simple as I could, which is counter-nature for me. I gotta say touring in so many countries and for that long, really affected us at many levels.

People tend to think in a very localized way about life and the issues they face every day. It was very interesting to me noticing how people from each country had fundamentally the same issues as anyone elsewhere, yet it appeared to them those issue were their very own. Media is really moving public opinion where they are paid to move it, and it is very hard to realize it when all you experience is life in one place."

The video for "Say It!" was shot in Caserta, Italy during their 2017 European tour at the Ex Saint Gobain, an abandoned warehouse from the '60s just a couple miles away from the largest royal residence in the world,

King's Palace Reggia Di Caserta.

After the premiere, "Say It!" will be available to view @ youtube.com/TheMaension and The Maension.com

"The song message is straight forward- Make your voice be heard LOUD and CLEAR and let them know that 'we are not gonna follow you!'" Mark said.

Red Wanting Blue

Meet amazing Midwestern rock band Red Wanting Blue. They released a new album called The Wanting on April 27th. The 2 main themes that make this band so unique is being “Connectors” and “Lifers.”

They are connectors by how their music is so relatable and the storytelling they showcase in each song. Every song is unique in a special way for the band. Their fans are die hearts especially in Ohio where most of them are from. They will go far and wide to see the band live everywhere.

They are “Lifers” since they overall are a DIY band who have been doing this for so long and every decision the lead singer Scott Terry makes somehow goes back to him playing music and being in RWB. He is lifer and that is all he know and you can hear that in the entire album.

Produced by acclaimed singer/songwriter Will Hoge, the new album The Wanting is the next level to finally put this band on the map and in everyone’s ears. The band’s hunger remains after 20 years and the hunger has been their fuel, their motivation, their essence. Hunger has steered every step of the group’s extraordinary journey, and now, it’s at the heart of their most powerful record yet.

I hope you will dive into it. The 3 singles we are focusing on is “Ulysses”, “High and Dry” and “Younger Years”

Making music courageously drawn from the present, inspired by the reality of the world that surrounds them. Theirs is a firestorm of fury, a searing sonic symphony of songs from the heart dealing, in songs likes ‘Scars’ and ‘Faceless’ with such subjects as bullying and internet trolls. Overall with songs like ‘Rise and ‘The Summit’, WITHIN THE GIANT'S REACH make music of strength, self-belief and empowerment, which will all be featured on their debut EP "In The Beginning", which is now available via the band's Bandcamp here and Big Cartel here.

Guitarist William Taylor comments:

No matter how hard it gets… Move forward! You only have one life, so live it! We want to project our drive, our reach for heavy brutal music, bringing back lyrical song-writing.”

"I can’t even try and place Within the Giant’s Reach into any genre as they seem to cover most genres in one track. There are elements of Thrash, Death, Death-core, Hardcore and Tech Death. How it is possible to manage this in one track is beyond my imagination. If their forthcoming EP is anything like this track, then I am sure that Within the Giant’s Reach will find themselves a lot of new fans across the globe."  – The Metal Review

Cooper-Moore

As a composer, performer, instrument builder/designer, storyteller, teacher, mentor, and organizer, Cooper-Moore has been a major, if somewhat behind-the-scenes, catalyst in the world of creative music for over 40 years.

As a child prodigy, Cooper-Moore played piano in churches near his birthplace in the Piedmont region of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. His initiation into the realm of avant-garde jazz dates back to the NYC loft era of the early to mid 1970s, and in 1973, Sonny Rollins asked Cooper-Moore to open for him at the Village Vanguard. It was not until the early 1990s, when William Parker asked him to join his group In Order To Survive, that Cooper-Moore’s pianistic gifts were again regularly featured in the jazz context.

Cooper-Moore’s creative life continues strong and unabated to the present day. He was the Lifetime Achievement Honoree at the 22nd annual Vision Festival, NYC in 2017.

Joshua Abrams

Joshua Abrams is a composer, bassist, and improviser. His formative musical experiences included performing in a chamber group conducted by Earle Brown and busking on the streets of Philadelphia as an original member of The Roots. Since the mid-1990s, Abrams has been a key figure in many of Chicago's creative music communities and has toured internationally with artists from many genres.

In 2010, Abrams formed the project Natural Information Society (NIS), a group that creates long-form psychedelic environments applying the hypnotic capabilities of the guimbri (a Gnawan lute) to a wide range of contemporary musics and methodologies including jazz, minimalism, and experimental rock.

Hamid Drake

Hamid Drake is an American jazz drummer and percussionist, now living in Chicago, yet he spends a great deal of his time touring worldwide.

Drake is widely regarded as one of the great percussionists in jazz and improvised music, with a uniquely poetic approach to drumming. His style is deeply affected by the presence of Afro-Cuban, Indian, and African percussion instruments and corresponding cultural influences.

His musical involvements date back to 1974 when he began working with the AACM and felt compelled then to explore earlier styles of drumming. He soon, however, began working with several of the greatest innovators in jazz at the time: Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, and Peter Brötzmann.

In live collaborations, Hamid Drake continually inspires his fellow musicians to attain higher musical levels, while at the same time carving out space for his own explorations. Hence, he has remained one of the most adventurous and compelling drummers to perform over the past 30 years.

Wave/Water Now Available

"Folk rock Americana as bright and crisp as a spring morning, but as bronze as autumn leaves." - Impose

"Inspired by struggle, triumph, the natural world, and spoken with a sincerity that touches deep..." - Glide

Russell James' path to the release of "Ghosts" was one of absolute grit and willpower. For the better part of 2017, James, who lives his life with the audio integration disorder hyperacusis, complicated by parallels to the autism spectrum and a personal battle with PTSD and anxiety, felt as though he was standing in the shadow of his depression. From the darkness, James found glimmers of hope during the process of recording Wave/Water, which he self-released on April 20, 2018.

The album concentrates profoundly on hope and the impact it can have on a person's life. Throughout Wave/Water, James insistently underlines the notion that no one is alone in fighting life's battles... that every person is weathering the pressures of something every day. Because of this unifying connection, James asserts that we're all in this together and hopes, eventually, that we can all lean on each other for support.

"Depression is always with me...there's always an undercurrent of depression that will poke its head up once every two days even when I'm feeling good," he told Substream Magazine, who premiered "Ghosts," the first track from Wave/Water - PRESS HERE to listen. "I want people to know that because you can be in the darkest period, that doesn't mean you can't do anything about it."

"My mental health puts a lot of occupational limits on me but songwriting remains unaffected," he adds. "I get a sense of coping and healing from the creative practice as well as the sense that I still have something to give and we all need something that helps us push back what haunts us."
