#RBMU Spotlight On #DavidForaker - The Blues Fiddler

Blues fiddler Dave Foraker is a truly unique solo performer. You can find him sitting at the piano, telling stories, singing blues and standards at a piano bar or at an assisted-living  center. Maybe you might  see him with his "funky-white fiddle" along with a soulful voice working with some of Alton, Illinois' top musicians.

"Foraker's soulful voice, to me, reflects Ray Charles, Joe Cocker and Gregg Allman. His "funky-white fiddle" mimics the style of the late Albert King."
- Occasionally Bluesletter

"In his 19 seasons of entertaining at the Biltmore Estate, Dave has proven to be a reliable and quite a crowd-pleaser."

2017 was huge for new music in the Saint Louis, Missouri metropolitan area and beyond. This is not your traditional end of the year post. It's meant to engage the listener and new music fans. It's about your favorites and what you are listening to. Maybe something new you discovered?

Use the #STLMU2017 hashtag or tag @STLMU with your favorite new release or releases on Facebook or Twitter over the course of now to the end of January 2018. You can send you favorite anonymously by email to the address listed at the bottom of this article and by messaging the fan page on Facebook or the Twitter account if you prefer. You can post your comment HERE on this Facebook thread. Whatever is clever. It does not matter if your favorite album, single, etc. is in one of the new releases posts below. What does matter is that it came out this year from a original music artist in 2017 from either the state of Missouri or from the Southern/Central areas of the state of Illinois. Even if they are natives to the area and do not currently reside in the vicinity. After the deadline the results will be gathered and a post will be published with the results on all of your favorites.

Note: From January to June of this year the initial format of new music posts here were combined using Bandcamp, SoundCloud and then YouTube together. Over time, artist, venue and media exclusives were also introduced. Due to increased volume, the releases had to be divided into three different post formats to accommodate. The idea has been to try and cover the state of Missouri and onto the Southern and Central parts of Illinois where possible.

The = symbol denotes a YouTube releases post with artist, venue & media exclusives.

The + symbol denotes a Bandcamp new releases post.

The x symbol denotes a SoundCloud new releases post.

The < symbol denotes a combined post of new music using multiple sites.

The - symbol denotes a YouTube playlist for that particular month.

The Interrupters are an American ska punk band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2011. The band comprises Aimee Interrupter on lead vocals, Kevin Bivona on guitar, Justin Bivona on bass, and Jesse Bivona on drums.

Formation:

The three Bivona brothers met Aimee Allen, a solo artist at the time, in 2009 while touring with their band Telacasters supporting The Dirty Heads and Sugar Ray. In 2011, Aimee and Kevin started writing songs together and brought Kevin's brothers, twins Jesse and Justin, in to play drums and bass. That led to the four forming The Interrupters.

Early years:

The band got an early start, touring with bands such as RancidThe TransplantsDevil's Brigade, and Left Alone; as well as playing the American music festival Riot Fest in Chicago and Denver, and the Canadian music festival Amnesia Rockfest, all before the release of their first record. They were frequently involved with Tim Armstrong's Tim Timebomb and Friends project, which saw the online-release of a song a day for an entire year. They were also members of the touring group.

- About SWMRS:

Oakland, CA Bay area rock band SWMRS previously  released a music video for the track "Drive North" off their their critically acclaimed debut album Drive North. "We wanted to critique Los Angeles with the same kind of holier-than-thou contempt that Anthony Fantano approaches his subjects with. It's cheeky and in good fun, but maybe it points out a few glaring issues with that city," offered singer/guitarist Cole Becker on the inspiration for the clip. The video, which was directed by Ryan Baxley (FIDLAR, The Front Bottoms, Bleached), can be seen HERE.

In conjunction with the video's release, the band has also shared an interactive map for "The Pin Drop". Fans can upload a photo via instagram using geo/location tags and the hashtag #DriveNorth to drop their pins on the SWMRS Drive North map. The map can be seen HERE.

SWMRS recently did a tour of Europe and the UK with support from The Regrettes. Currently the band is on on a North American co-headline tour with Los Angeles ska-punk band The Interrupters that kicked off on October 13 in Seattle, WA and will wrap on December 17th in Denver, CO. Sharp Shock provided support on the West coast leg of the tour, and The Regrettes are providing support on the tour's East coast leg. Next February, SWMRS will support Rise Against on a tour of Australia and New Zealand. A complete list of upcoming live dates and ticket information is available HERE

Last fall, Fueled By Ramen (home to Twenty One Pilots, Panic! At The Disco, Paramore, and many more) re-released SWMRS' debut album Drive North. The re-released version of the album includes re-mastered versions of the original release's 12 tracks and new songs "Lose It" and "Palm Trees". Drive North is available now digitally HERE and physically HERE.

Praised for "defining the sound of now" in Rolling Stone's Best New Artists 2016 feature, SWMRS originally released Drive North in February via their own Uncool Records. Noisey announced the release and premiered the album's lead single "Figuring It Out" praising the track as a "poppy foot-tapper filled with skate-gang vocals."Nylon premiered the band's video for the track, which was directed by fellow Bay Area artist Kreayshawn. Watch it HERE. SWMRS made their network television debut, performing the song on CBS's The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Produced by FIDLAR frontman Zac Carper, Drive North also features the band's debut single "Miley" which i-D Magazine premiered last fall, hailing the song as "the most punk tribute to Miley Cyrus ever." The band's DIY music video for the track can be seen HERE. Album opener, "Harry Dean" is an abridged version of a previously 17-minute epic the band originally recorded to soundtrack Saint Laurent Paris's Spring/Summer 2016 presentation, earning them praise from fashion publications like WWD and Interview Magazine

Biography:

There's never been a punk band like SWMRS, the Oakland quartet that combines the caustic broadsides of The Clash, the amphetamine bubblegum of the Ramones, and the searing lyrics, propulsive energy, and raw honesty of Public Enemy, Frank Ocean, A Tribe Called Quest and Kurt Cobain. Formed after the dissolution of their previous band, Emily's Army, the childhood friends (Cole Becker, lead vocals, rhythm guitar; Max Becker, lead vocals, lead guitar; Joey Armstrong, drums, backing vocals; and Sebastian Mueller, bass, backing vocals) showcase telepathic chemistry on their formal debut, "Drive North." Produced by Zac Carper of FIDLAR, it's suffused with coming of age jams, subversive anthems to Miley Cyrus, and a sense of freedom forged out of modern-day confusion. The guitars draw blood, the drums detonate, the voice is unique-the sound is timeless. Originally released on the band's own Uncool Records, Drive North was re-released by Fueled By Ramen in October 2016.

Perfectly imperfect - that’s one way to describe LA based punk act, The Regrettes. Writing songs that proudly bear a brazen and unabashed attitude in the vein of acts Courtney Barnett or Karen O - with a pop aesthetic reminiscent of 50’s and 60’s acts a la the Temptations or Buddy Holly - the LA based four piece create infectious, punk driven tracks.

Lead by outspoken frontwoman, Lydia Night, and comprised of Genessa Gariano on guitar, Sage Nicole on bass and drummer Maxx Morando, the group have left the LA rock scene floored, managing to capture the hearts of jaded rock critics while opening for acts like Kate Nash, Jack Off Jill, Bleached, Pins, Deep Vally and more. With nothing but demos available online, the group are already beginning to generate hype, from outlets like NPR, and with NYLON already heralding them them as a “punk act you should be listening to”.

- About The Regrettes:

From the opening moments on a track by The Regrettes, we’re greeted with a wall of guitars, infectious melodies and a wistful nostalgia that continues right until the final notes. Taking cues from acts like Hinds and Hole, there’s a wistful sense of youth and vulnerability that lies at the heart of each song.

A song by The Regrettes is, essentially, a diary entry into Lydia’s life. “My music is a spectrum of every emotion that I have felt in the last year, and you can hear that when you hear the songs. Everything that is happening in my life influences me. It’s everything from boys, to friends, to being pissed off at people, to being really sad. Just everything.”

The most intoxicating draw of The Regrettes is their bashful, heart-on-your-sleeve temperament - writing urgent and fast-paced pop songs with a punk rock mentality. “The way that we write, it’s all based on honesty,” muses Lydia on the group’s punk aesthetic. “If I finish a song, I’ll just leave it - I won’t really go back to it. I like things to feel in the moment and I don’t want it to be perfect. If I work on something too much I lose it and get bored and I want to do the next one.”

First song, “A Living Human Girl,” best showcases the vulnerability of the group’s lyrics. Singing about a less than perfect complexion, a bra size that is considered smaller than most, and those little red bumps you get when you shave, The Regrettes aren’t afraid to embrace their imperfections. “Sometimes I’m pretty and sometimes I’m not”, sings Lydia over 60’s inspired guitar riffs and a kicked back drum beat. “I don’t remember exactly what sparked it, but I remember when I wrote those lyrics, I was just really angry.”

“There are times when you feel really insecure and you really don’t like yourself, so I wrote it for people who feel that and I wrote it for myself. I just felt like there wasn’t a song like that out there. A song that if I was feeling super shitty about myself, that I could listen to. I wanted something that would make girls and boys feel confident,” she explains.

Lydia’s not afraid to have her feelings on display. “I am not scared of anyone judging me, I don’t care. I don’t give a fuck if someone doesn’t like what I have to say. For every person that likes you, there’s a person that doesn’t like you. No matter what, if people can relate to the music then it’s worth it. That’s what is cool for me.” And at the end of the day, isn’t that what punk music is all about?

Penguin Party: @SarahSchonert - New Album Out Fri.12/8 (Peoria, IL)

Sarah Schonert (Peoria, IL) combines classical-sounding piano with ambient washes, vocoded synths, electronic elements, and layered vocals, and she is not afraid to experiment with vintage instruments as well as new technology to create her sound. From what was heard by listening to her newest release "Penguin Party" it can be said that it's quite engaging. The sophistication of Sarah's craft and style create a mood and energy rarely experienced.

"For "Penguin Party," I chose to stick to the keyboards and loopers to focus on creative a more energetic album that people would want to move to. It also gave me a chance to experiment with some new ideas, such as using vocoder to make a drum track drive a bassline, looping live, and extravagant piano ornaments."

The artwork for Penguin Party features photography by Brian Rowe (argentography.com), taken on film using vintage cameras to counter Sarah's digital sound.

“Be Kind Simulacra” is a collection of 5 songs written and recorded over the course of fall 2015 through summer 2017. *Tracklisting With "Be Kind Simulacra" Review:

1) RTGTW:The first forty seconds of RTGTW has a mathematical and mechanical atmosphere. The melody of the chorus is interesting because it's syncopated with the down beat. It is also traditional in the sense that the first verse and chorus are introduced by the one minute mark. It's different because the structure of the song is intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, outro.

2) Opti-Mistic: The rhythm section jams as the guitar sets the tone, there is a nice drum fill and then que vocals all by the ten second mark
The melody is upbeat on the verse filling in the full groove of the band's sound. The chorus remains true to the vibe, however it really suits the song title also. This track has some neat fills and progressions. The bridge is written well. It closes out with the chorus.

3) Light Breaks: The bass plays a more somber tone at the beginning, an electronic atmosphere is also presented. The vocals also seem slightly melancholy to match the tone. The guitar utilizes some cool effects. By the build of the chorus one can feel the anthemic tone of it. The bridge progesses the song as if it were to solidify the song. Then it just keeps getting better from there.

4) The Gear Wars: This song starts off with a bleep-bloop type sound from the guitar with a vocal melody in tow. Some cymbal work is heard and then drums follow. The songwriting is thought provoking and unique. The bass seems to somewhat abstain until about a minute and a half in until the second verse kicks in. This one has some cool builds and ideas.

5) TransGalaxy: Keyboard fills the intro fifteen seconds in until the band strikes. The vocals are introduced at thirty seconds. This track has an epic quality to it. Every member shines throughout this one. You just might even get goose bumps before the song ends. The structure is different and leaves you wanting more.

- Recorded at Native Sound.

- Mixed at Bird Cloud Recording.

- Mastered at Joel Hatstat Audio.

Q:

What does simulacra mean?

A:

simulacrum (pluralsimulacra from Latinsimulacrum, which means "likeness, similarity") is a representation or imitation of a person or thing. The word was first recorded in the English language in the late 16th century, used to describe a representation, such as a statue or a painting, especially of a god. By the late 19th century, it had gathered a secondary association of inferiority: an image without the substance or qualities of the original. Philosopher Fredric Jamesonoffers photorealism as an example of artistic simulacrum, where a painting is sometimes created by copying a photograph that is itself a copy of the real. Other art forms that play with simulacra include trompe-l'œil, pop artItalian neorealism, and French New Wave.

Nashville-based rock band Goodbye June takes Budweiser behind the scenes on the set of their music video for the track "Good Side" talking about their beginnings, struggles in the industry, and what the American dream means to them. The band recently wrote the track "Liberty Mother" featured in Budweiser's "Brewed Across America" commercialPRESS HERE to watch the interview on Rolling Stone.

The psychedelic and colorful video for "Good Side," directed by Tyler Dunning Evans, trails the band as they embark on a pilgrimage to the "good side" and highlights the song's mind-bending guitar riffs coupled with hypnotizing vocals. PRESS HERE to watch "Good Side."

"We wanted the video for 'Good Side' to portray the beauty and color of what life and beyond may be. This was the most fun we've had shooting a video in a while. Our first voyage in the world of green screen. Enjoy." - Goodbye June

The band will also end the year by joining southern rock band Whiskey Myers and rock band Greta Van Fleet on the road for select dates in December as well as a hometown show in Nashville, TN. See below for a complete schedule.

Raised in West Tennessee and Southern Indiana, cousins Landon Milbourn (lead vocals,) Brandon Qualkenbush (rhythm guitar, backing vocals,) and Tyler Baker (lead guitar) came together after the death of Baker's brother and made a decision to chase a dream - and proceed no matter the cost. If not reckless, the reality of struggling to get by gives the lacerating, guitar-driven music a grittiness that's nothing short of broken glass. Focusing on writing songs, mastering their instruments and really stripping away the sludgy build-up so many bands think is important, Goodbye June hit upon the essence of their uniquely aggressive sound.

After touring the U.S. incessantly, their hard-hitting songs were placed on Madden 17, Wrestlemania (WWE), NHL All Access broadcasts as well as NFL and ESPN College Football broadcasts. With the EP Danger in the Morning, their focus was strengthened and their indie label Cotton Valley Music found a partner in Interscope. The group's debut album Magic Valley was released on May 5, 2017 via Cotton Valley/Interscope Records.

The eight-track double EP, From The Fires combines four new tracks recorded in September at Rust Belt Studios in Detroit – two new original songs, “Talk on the Street” and “Edge of Darkness,” as well as two covers, Sam Cooke’s emotional “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “Meet On The Ledge" by the late 60’s folk rock band Fairport Convention – with the four songs from the band’s debut EP, Black Smoke Rising, released earlier this year. From The Fires was produced by the same duo that helmed Black Smoke Rising, Al Sutton and Marlon Young. As Greta Van Fleet vocalist Josh Kiszka said, “These eight songs belong together as they share a theme of basic humanity.”

FROM THE FIRES TRACK LISTING:
01. Safari Song
02. Edge of Darkness
03. Flower Power
04. A Change Is Gonna Come
05. Highway Tune
06. Meet On The Ledge
07. Talk On the Street
08. Black Smoke Rising

The four new recordings shine a light on some of the band members’ earliest musical influences, the blues, soul and funk of artists like Muddy Waters, Joe Cocker, Sam & Dave, Howlin’ Wolf and Wilson Pickett. As Screamer magazine said in its From The Fires review, “These new tunes show how much Greta Van Fleet is really capable of and how deep the talent runs."

According to Josh, "Edge of Darkness” is about "the bravery behind the compassion that we feel for each other. One of the lyrics is ‘I’ve got love in my heart,’ and I think, as a global community, it’s a spiritual thing to share all that we have together. Giving love is giving power."

Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” is one that has special meaning for the band. When Josh and twin brother/guitarist Jake first heard it, they thought it was a song they’d like to cover, but never did. Fast forward a few years and ironically, co-producer Marlon Young suggested they cover it for this release. “All of us are very affected by oppression of any type,” said Josh, “cultural, racial, sexual. I’ve never experienced what Sam Cooke did so I have to admit, it was a little difficult for me, getting behind the mic, but I did it because singing this song meant a lot to me.” As Icon vs Icon wrote about this track, “This is where the group truly shows they are like no other. This isn’t simply a rock song, or even blues, it’s a gospel ballad that will move even the toughest soul.”

Josh has always connected with folk songs, with their beautiful melodies and harmonies and is a big fan of late ‘60s folk-rock groups like Spyro Gyra, Pentangle and Fairport Convention. “Meet On The Ledge” was composed by Fairport Convention’s Richard Thompson. "I was on a train going to New York,” he recalls, "and on the way, I listened to an entire decade of Fairport Convention’s music. ‘Meet On The Ledge’ was the fourth or fifth track I heard and it caught me by surprise. I was absolutely entranced; the verse and chorus blew my mind.”

About "Talk On The Street”, Josh describes it as "a fun song, full of catchy riffs and dynamic drums, kind of an ambiguous wild ride, a real rock’n’roll song.”

Greta Van Fleet did some writing and recording last month, then too some well-deserved time off for Thanksgiving, and are currently in the last weeks of its first-ever U.S. tour with all headline dates sold out in advance.
