Simply Christmas: @leslieodomjr w/ @slso Sun. 12/3

The multifaceted performer Leslie Odom Jr., best known for originating the Tony award-winning role of Aaron Burr in the original cast of Broadway's Hamilton and his role in the TV series Smash, joins the St. Louis Symphony for an extraordinary event. It takes place on Sunday, December 3rd at Powell Hall and begins at 7:00 pm. Visit HERE for the event details on Facebook.

Award-winning vocalist Leslie Odom Jr. has announced that he'll be releasing a new deluxe edition of his critically acclaimed "Simply Christmas" album on October 27, 2017 on S-Curve Records.  The stunning album of reinterpreted holiday classics debuted at #1 on the Soundscan and Billboard Jazz charts last year.  This deluxe addition will feature four new songs including, "Please Come Home For Christmas," "Edelweiss" arranged by Grammy nominee Michael McElroy and featuring Odom Jr.'s wife of 5 years, an accomplished performer in her own right, Nicolette Robinson, and "The Christmas Waltz" featuring a brand new arrangement by Emmy-winning, Grammy nominated arranger Rob Mathes.  Full track listing below.  "Simply Christmas" showcases Odom Jr.'s soulful jazz versions of Christmas classics and follows his successful self-titled jazz debut.

Said Leslie Odom Jr., "One of the things I was looking forward to most while recording the album was performing the tunes live. These classics are dear to me, we'd worked so hard on the project, and I couldn't wait to share. Things worked out differently than I imagined. I was on a plane for London almost immediately after the record was released for the start of the Murder On The Orient Express shoot.  One year later and we have the upcoming release of the film and a slightly less hectic calendar. We added some of our favorites that we couldn't include the first time around and once again I am really looking forward to celebrating the holidays performing these classic tunes next to people I care about very much."

Odom Jr. spent his summer performing to sold out audiences around the country including appearances at Newport Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, The Ravinia Festival, and with the Boston Pops.  Up next, he will be performing on the lawn at The Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City, IA.  Odom Jr. will also be a part of Live From Lincoln Center, a new series that will present four leading voices of musical theater.  The performances will be filmed in front of audiences at The Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center this December, and air on PBS nationwide in 2018.  This fall, Odom Jr. will be starring in Murder On The Orient Express alongside Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, and more. The film is in theaters on November 10, 2017.

Odom Jr.'s self-titled debut jazz album on S-Curve Records won over critics and fans upon release last year, and debuted at #1 on Soundscan Current and Traditional Jazz Charts.  He completed his run as the original Aaron Burr in the smash hit Hamilton last summer, a role that won him a Tony & Grammy Award.  On the small screen, Odom, Jr. is best-known for his portrayal of 'Sam Strickland' in the NBC musical series, "Smash," and his recurring role as 'Reverend Curtis Scott' on "Law & Order: SVU."  He's also appeared in episodes of "Gotham," "Person of Interest," "Grey's Anatomy," "House of Lies," "Vanished" and "CSI: Miami."  On the big screen, he starred in the 2012 film, "Red Tails," opposite Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr. and David Oyelowo.

The @NewMusicCircle Presents #BattleTrance @TheLuminaryArts Fri. 12/2

The all-tenor sax quartet, Battle Trance, specializes in the uncanny transformations of their instruments. Together they perform longform, meditative pieces with a strong emphasis on drone, circular breathing, and trancelike repetition, bringing to mind the works of 20th Century minimalist composers like Philip Glass or Steve Reich, but with an added primal energy and urgency reminiscent of Pharaoh Sanders or Joe McPhee.

- Watch video below:

Battle Trance has released two albums to date on the prolific indie-label, NNA TapesPalace of the Wind (2014) and Blade of Love (2016). Both albums have won praise for their genre-crossing compositions, drawing comparisons to the contemporary classical world, modal avant-garde jazz, and noise-based experimentalism. In live settings the quartet is capable of creating a hypnotic fury of notes, unifying both the harmonic and physical in sound.

Presented in partnership with The Luminary.

SNST, the newly-formed outfit featuring Chris Broach of Braid & The Firebird Band and Steve Znavor of The Firebird Band, are excited to announce the release of its debut album, Turn Out The Lights. Produced, recorded, and mixed by Will Yip (Tigers Jaw, Nothing, Circa Survive, Pity Sex), Turn Out The Lights represents a new beginning for both Broach and Znavor – a fresh body of work that seamlessly blends electronic and organic instrumentation into a unique amalgam of music that's as apt to make you dance as it is to make you think. Turn Out The Lightsis now available digitally (via iTunes and streaming on Spotify) and physically via Rhyme & Reason (featuring a limited edition 180-gram splatter vinyl option in addition to 180-gram regular black).

Additionally, SNST will be hitting the road again beginning on Friday, December 1 in Milwaukee, WI at Tonic. The tour will also feature headline appearances in St. Louis, MO on Saturday, December 2, Minneapolis, MN on Sunday, December 3, Urbana, IL on Friday, December 8, and culminate with two appearances Chicago, IL on Saturday, December 9 and Sunday, December 10. A full listing of dates can be found below with more information on the band’s official website: https://www.snstmusic.com.

Chris Broach, a lifelong musician who started his career as a member of the influential indie act Braid, and longtime collaborator Steve Znavor (with whom he performed in The Firebird Band with) wrote the songs that would become Turn Out The Lights under the new moniker, SNST, at each other's respective residences in Chicago and Los Angeles. From the club-worthy, synth-driven groove of “Get Over Yourself” to the stripped-down perfection of “'76 – '78” and angular post-rock feel of “Running From The Girl,” Turn Out The Lights is an album that's difficult to categorize because it doesn't have an allegiance to any one genre – and its strengths lie in the liberating nature of that freedom. Infectious as it is intellectual, the duo tackle topics ranging from the deeply personal to passionately political within the course of the album.

“What I love about this band is that Steve and I are able to do whatever we want without trying to hold ourselves to someone else’s idea of what we ought to be doing,” Broach says. “There's no limit to what we can do with this band and that makes it an important piece of my life. As an artist you don't often get a chance to express yourself in this way, and I'm happy that this project came together the way it did.”

Dr. Spin (Thrust)/Take Your Time ft. @jessejamesganno w/ @TheloniusKrypto #Funk #Soul Available On Digital And 7 Inch Vinyl From @RecordsYoruba

Following the critically acclaimed 7” singles by Miles Bonny and Osunlade (YSR001 and YSR002), Yoruba Records is proud to present their next installment of the Yoruba Soul Originals series Dr. Spin (Thrust)/Take Your Time.

These new fresh slices of timelessness are brought to you by St. Louis native, Jesse Gannon. Gannon’s live act, Jesse Gannon And The Truth have been a staple in the St. Louis soul scene for years. Although its been a while since his last projects on the now-defunct STL-based The Loud Label, Gannon never really stopped creating or recording. After a chance meeting in the River City with Yoruba label boss Osunlade, it became clear that Yoruba Records would be a perfect outlet for some of these new ideas Gannon was cooking up.

Opening things up is “Dr. Spin (Thrust)", where Gannon is looking around him and pointing at our so called leaders. The mid tempo groove starts out with Kwanae Johnson introducing the main theme on his flute, and then Jesse gets going with a feeling we all seem to be sharing at the moment. Who is Dr. Spin and why does Dr. Spin continue to manipulate and distort the truth? Gannon wastes no time in expressing the frustration of our current times, while the band stays locked-in a groove that feels both fresh and deeply rooted. “Dr. Spin” also features the very talented Thelonius Kryptonite alongside Jesse on vocal duties.

On the flip-side, we get a little more introspective. In a world where we place so much emphasis of heading somewhere (or nowhere) fast, Jesse pleads “What’s the rush? Won’t you take your time?” For Jesse, it’s about confronting the gray areas of life. Maybe, just maybe, happiness is not in what you seek outside, but its within. Within you and within reach. Gannon keeps things more intimate here, slowing down the tempo and providing a backdrop of reflection with its rolling bass lines, intricate horn arrangements, and Gannon’s own subtle work on the keys.

Though this single clocks in at less than eight minutes, what you have here is just a small taste of what’s to come. For “Take Your Time,” this only the first part of a three-part epic. Believe that there’s more to come. Watch this space.

The focus for the Yoruba Soul Originals series has always been funk and soul of the highest caliber. Jesse Gannon’s new efforts does not disappoint that standard while bringing a message that is undeniably timely.

The @beachslang Tour w/ @hausedave @stdresses Comes To @TheReadyRoom Fri. 11/24

The current Beach Slang tour comes to The Ready Room this Friday, November 24th along with Dave Hause & The Mermaid, plus See Through Dresses.  The doors will open at 7:00 pm and the show starts at 8:00 pm. This is an all-ages event. Visit HERE for event details on Facebook. Continue on below for more about the artists on this show and for links to their internet prescence.

Beach Slang are a three piece emo/indie band from Philadelphia, PA who have garnered a lot of attention considering that they've only released two 7-inches, 2014's Cheap Thrills On A Dead End Street and its companion Who Would Ever Want Something So Broken? Refreshingly this Philadelphia-based act have built their hype the old-fashioned way, without any gimmicks or marketing teams, which makes sense when you consider that frontman and writer James Alex cut his teeth in the Pennsylvania pop-punk act Weston while drummer JP Flexner and bassist Ed McNulty also play in buzzed about projects such as Ex-Friends and Crybaby. However there's something indefinable about Beach Slang's music that evokes the spirit of punk and juxtaposes it into something that's as brutally honest as it is infectiously catchy.

"When this whole thing started it was like, 'Alright, I'm going to get to hear my sappy little songs played loud and interact with other human beings again,' the admittedly shy Alex says looking back on Beach Slang's existence." Then one day this really sweet explosion happened and Beach Slang became a thing that mattered to people." As anyone who has seen Beach Slang live can attest, it matters to people a lot including the group's peers like Cursive who hand-selected Beach Slang to open for them on their upcoming headlining tour. "I used to skate with this really sweet girl who would refer to the way I spoke as 'beach slang' and I've never shaken that off," Alex continues. "The really soft parts of your childhood, I suppose, have a way of sticking around. I like that."

That feeling of youth and vulnerability also lie at the core of Beach Slang's music, which is part punk, part pop and all catharsis. It references the ghosts of The Replacements but keeps one foot firmly rooted in the present. It's fun and it's serious. It's sad but it isn't. It's Beach Slang. Enjoy it and look out for the band's debut full-length later this year because they're still just getting started.http://beachslang.com/

Sometimes you have to move forward in order to see where you started out—and the hardscrabble wisdom that one gains from that type of journey forms the backbone of Dave Hause's third full-length, Bury Me In Philly. “Punk rock guilt is a real thing,” the lifelong Philadelphian says from his new home in California. “I like to make rock n' roll music because that's what I love and I don't care if Zeppelin or the Stones aren't cool to the punks ... it's cool to me and that's what matters.” In that spirit, Bury Me In Philly is a love letter both to his hometown as well as the larger-than-life rock acts he grew up worshiping as a teenager.

“I’ve been sharing stages and singing with Dave Hause for eight years now and he's still teaching me things I didn't know. A true diamond in the punk rock rough.” – Frank Turner

For the follow-up to 2013's Devour, a newly sober Hause holed up in his new home and wrote nearly forty songs, eleven of which would end up as Bury Me In Philly. “One thing I was focused on was trying to make the songs more concise and uplifting than the last record. My last album was a divorce record and during the touring of it I fell in love with my fiancé, moved to California and things got a lot better.” Hause's newfound perspective allowed him to dig even deeper as a songwriter, whether he's getting intimately introspective on the tender ballad “Wild Love” or channeling that into shot of sonic adrenaline on monster anthems such as “Shaky Jesus.” From the fuzzed-out boogie of “Dirty Fucker” to the folksy sing-along vibe of “Helluva Home” and the classic rock-inspired groove of “The Mermaid,” Bury Me In Philly may not be an easy album to categorize but it's a joy to get lost inside.

"Dave is a lifer. He always has his eyes steady focus forward and on making each song better than the last. There's not going to be a stopping point for Dave; it's a train going forward. For me, I've enjoyed every minute of the ride being his friend."
– Brian Fallon, Solo Artist / The Gaslight Anthem

Affectionately known as “The Songwriters’ Songwriter” by those in the know, Bury Me In Philly has already amounted to over 1,000,000 cumulative plays on Spotify alone and sales of his infamous “Dirty Fucker” line of tour merchandise–which has featured images of both Donald Trump and a shamed New Jersey Governor Chris Christie–has allowed the band to donate thousands of dollars to pro-immigration organizations and refugee causes.

“Dave is a true artist of genuine intention and heart. But I need not tell you this. His purity flows, vibrant, through his songs, his words and his powerful voice. Upon a single listen you know that Dave is the real thing.” – Davey Havok, AFI

Continuing his never-ending onslaught of “spit-shine” working class tales that run the relatable gambit of disappointment and heartbreak (but still ultimately show us that good guys really do win in the end), Hause will be bringing these anthems to venues across North America throughout the rest of 2017.

See Through Dresses dropped its Tiny Engines label debut End of Days fall of 2015, introducing a wider audience to a sound both intrinsic and environmental, with stark contrasts between its principal songwriters’ devastatingly riff-heavy jams and endearingly honest confessionals. It showcased what the band can do in spaces where guitars and rhythms rule the roost.

If End of Days is its rock record, Horse of the Other World, out June 30th, is See Through’s dreamy opus. Recorded in 2016 in two locations — ARC Studios with Ben Brodin (Pile, First Aid Kit, The Good Life) and at the band’s home studio, Little Machine, by Mathew Carroll — it signals a sonic leap into a more ethereal, soundscape-driven aesthetic.

Reverb-drenched and synth-laden, Horse of the Other World blends Carroll and Sara Bertuldo’s masterful mood creation and technical prowess while further exploring the depths of the band’s dynamics. “Pretty Police” mixes sparkle and bounce with brood, while “Violet” cuts sharply via crystalline keys and arpeggiated chords. Bassist Alex Kirts pumps the album’s bleeding heart and drummer Nate Van Fleet is tactical and creative. Their playing shines as the foundation of songs like “Lucy’s Arm” and “Herbivore,” whose climaxes are textbook See Through Dresses

Bursting onto the Omaha scene with its 2014 self-titled debut, the Omaha indie rock band continues to gain international traction. The band has toured the U.S. several times over and made trips through Canada and Europe. It has recently shared the road with Cursive, Beach Slang and Cymbals Eat Guitars, while locally opening for the likes of Sebadoh, Soul Asylum and Deep Sea Diver.

See Through Dresses is as follows:

Sara Bertuldo - vocals, guitar, synth
Mathew Carroll - vocals, guitar, synth
Alex Kirts - bass guitar
Nate Van Fleet - drums, percussion
