Singer-Songwriter #EmilyWilson + Her @Kickstarter Campaign Launch Makes Her Music A Reality

For most of Emily Wilson's life, She has only written and played music in secret. With this Kickstarter campaign, She is changing that. There is a video on the campaign site of her telling her story and mission.

Meet Emily Wilson, a singer-songwriter based in St. Louis, Missouri playing indie rock. Though she has been a musician for many years, it is only recently that she has discovered just how profoundly important making music is to her. Over the past few months, her songwriting has lifted her spirit up from very low depths. She wants people to hear about her life experiences through her music because of the weight it takes off her shoulders, and hopes people can find strength in sharing their own stories through her music. With this Kickstarter campaign, she plans to make sure her voice is heard and with your help, that can become a reality.

Deceptively poignant duo, Coping Skills, from Philadelphia will release their sophomore record, Worst New Music, will be out on April 13, 2018 via Citywide Records. It’s “moderately gay post-ironic bummer pop” that consists of “moving, endearing, and occasionally upsetting songs about, like, the exhausting burden of living under capitalism, post-millennial rot, and the ways mental health can affect both individuals and relationships.”

Today, the album is streaming in full on Tidaland the band is Tidal's Rising Artist of the Week. Tidal says,

"At the core of these very human tales of doubt, shortcomings and listlessness is an endearing bond between co-vocalists/songwriters Lauren DeLucca and Rachel Dispenza. That bond is captured in their on-stage banter, playful vocal exchanges in songs like “4 Days with Me Will Change Your Life (Cool Girl)” and both’s shared interests in being a part of the music industry in a way that directly bridges the gap between musician and public."

The first single from the album, "I'd Rather Not (Yeah), debuted on Autostraddle, who describe the simple yet effective premise of the video where "singer/guitarist Rachel and singer/bassist Lauren struggle through the mundanity of everyday life, til they’re finally able to flip the script and rock out together." Second single, "Bagel Fruit Water," premiered on Stereogum, which they aptly call "a catchy one about our tendency to treat our bodies like shit when we feel bad about everything else."

As the follow-up to their debut album, Relatable Web Content, which Stereogum calls a “wry and sharp collection of tracks, filled with odes to Ben Gibbard and songs about mounting college debt,” one thing is for sure: this band is committed to the bit and they’re all about the joke.

At times, it’s fair to say the duo (Rachel Dispenza and Lauren DeLucca) are annoyingly self-aware. Here’s what they have to say about the title of their sophomore record’s title:

Calling it Worst New Music is about being comfortable enough in our own strengths and insecurities that it makes it impossible for others to use them against us. Any criticism we might get, we've probably already said about ourselves. The most important opinions about an artist’s music should always be their own, but what we've noticed is how affected bands and listeners are by bad music journalism and "tastemakers." And that sucks. Because it's just one dude's shitty opinion versus your own shitty opinion. We want to spur a conversation about music press and its effect on both band's and listener's perception of music; drawing attention to the publicist/PR aspect to releasing music that pulls many strings but doesn't get talked about nearly the same way as say, signing to a label does. We want to talk about it.

Worst New Music is the band’s first time in a studio working soley as the musicians and not the engineers. Both Dispenza and DeLucca have backgrounds in recording, and many more hours have been spent behind the console than in front of it. Having recording their prior releases themselves, they took this opportunity to see what it was like to open their door to collaboration. They chose Evan Bernard and Chris Baglivo at Big Mama’s Recording because they’re another duo, who understand the dynamic of working as a team.

The new album is available for preorder - both digitally and on a limited run of 25 glitter or 125 black cassettes. Coping Skills will be on a record release tour throughout the Spring (dates below). Two Philadelphia shows will happen before the tour, to kick things off in the band's home city (3/23 at JJ’s Diner for The Music Matters Project Benefit Show, and 4/12 at Johnny Brenda’s).

*** Note on pronouns: Rachel Dispenza is genderfluid and uses they/them, and Lauren DeLucca is agender and uses they/them.

BIO:

Coping Skills is a band of two people who live in Philadelphia, the place where bands are from now. Lauren DeLucca and Rachel Dispenza met by chance when they ended up moving into the same house after they both enrolled in college for the second time. They started working the same jobs, dreading the same bosses, and decided to learn how to play instruments so they could start a band. This is that band. They graduated, and as of this writing, their combined student loan debt is exactly $288,136.69. Which is a lot of money. They wrote a song about this. Please pay them.

Since starting the band in 2015, they’ve written a bunch of songs and played a bunch of shows and learned to play their instruments, more or less. That’s what bands do. In 2016, they released a tape called Relatable Web Content, which essentially describes the spirit of the thing. Rachel plays the guitar and sings. Lauren plays the bass and sings. They have a rotating cast of friends who play drums with them. For a while they used a drum machine operated by a stuffed hedgehog named Doug, but they fired Doug later that year. Despite creative differences, the three remain friends.

Their songs are just songs. You’ve heard songs? They sound like those. The best parts of this band come from a dynamic Rachel describes as an unstoppable-force-immovable-object-collision sorta situation, where theirs and Lauren’s gut impulses come in conflict, and they end up writing records full of pop songs about bagels and the way that life can suck. They self-identify as “moderately gay post-ironic bummer pop,” which gives you a good idea of what you’re in for.

On April 13th, they’re putting out a new record they’re calling Worst New Music, mostly because it fucking sucks, and they wanted to tell you that first. But also it’s because the idea of Music Taste is a late capitalist branding tool that only stands to benefit tech companies and major labels. Music criticism, as much as it even still exists in 2018, is a vehicle for ads for alcohol brands owned by InBev more often than it is anything else. (Also, hello, InBev if you’re reading this, Coping Skills would love to discuss the possibility of a more direct sponsorship opportunity.)

Anyway, behind that real firebrand of a title are more moving, endearing, and occasionally upsetting songs about, like, the exhausting burden of living under capitalism, post-millennial rot, and the ways mental health can affect both individuals and relationships. There’s still jokes and stuff, so it’s not that serious. But it kinda is.

Eternal Summers are releasing their 5th album, Every Day It Feels Like I’m Dying... with Nevado Music on May 4th.

Eternal Summers

Having formed in 2009, Eternal Summers has now been operating as the trio of Nicole Yun, Daniel Cundiff and Jonathan Woods longer then they did as a duo without Jonathan. Long gone are the days of the Roanoke based collective known as the Magic Twig Community that saw the handful of like-minded indie artists working together; but what has grown in place is a band that stands on its own, in the words of All Music, “The kind that other bands will look to for inspiration 20 years later.”

With several previous releases, there has already been a lot said about Eternal Summers music. From the crafty minimalism on their debut Silver, to the dream punk sheen on 2012’s breakout Correct Behavior, to the guitar driven power on The Drop Beneath, the evolution of Eternal Summers marks a band that embraces both anthemic rock and bittersweet ballads - a band that is grounded in jangle pop but with an added depth that rewards on repeated listens.

Eternal Summers never ending tour cycle has seen them play with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Surfer Blood, The Presidents of the United States of America, Cheatahs, We are Scientists, Nada Surf, amongst others.

Additionally, Rogue Wave is touring this spring across North America in support of the reissue, performing the album in its entirety nightly. It began on March 21 at Turf Club in Minneapolis, MN, the tour visits markets such as Chicago, IL on March 22, Toronto, ON on March 25, New York, NY on March 28, Atlanta, GA on April 5, Nashville, TN on April 6, Austin, TX on May 2, Los Angeles, CA on May 5, San Francisco, CA on May 10 & 11, Seattle, WA on May 19, and conclude with a performance at Top Hat in Missoula, MT on May 20. A full listing of dates can be found below and more information on the tour can be found via Rogue Wave’s official website HERE

Produced by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney, Elvis Costello) with Zach Rogue and originally released by Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records, Asleep At Heaven’s Gate stands as Rogue Wave's definitive statement and a benchmark for a band at its creative height and most accomplished. Originally conceived as a double-album by Rogue, the album is a proudly defiant body of work shot through with heartfelt self-examination and a wider commentary on the flawed world around us. “Up to that point, it was the most magical and productive time we had ever had as a band,” Rogue reminisces about the era in which the album was born. “Found sounds, field recordings, 4-track tape machines, all of these things were used in making the record. We wanted to experiment and push ourselves to make more adventurous music.”

Part of the richness of Asleep At Heaven’s Gate is due to the band’s sense of experimentalism. “We were listening to a lot of Wendy Carlos, who scored Tron, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining,” Rogue continues. “She is responsible for a lot the ambient noise and the interesting sounds you hear. It’s that noise versus melody abstract sound debate. It’s the idea that banging on a wall or hitting a door with your hand can be a musical instrument.”

Asleep At Heaven’s Gate is not just the work of its four members strumming chords and hitting doors though, guest appearances and collaborations abound. Matthew Caws from Nada Surf sings on a couple of songs, indie innovator John Vanderslice contributes, and Snowblink’s Daniela Gesundheit sings on a number of tracks. For the sun-kissed epic “Own Your Own Home,” the band invited thirty friends into the studio with acoustic instruments of every ilk. In fact, Rogue estimates that they ended up using about 150 different instruments during the various recording sessions.

After the album was released, the band regretted having to omit some songs from the final product. To them, they are not throwaway tracks. They are as strong as anything the band recorded during that time period, and the idea of finally sharing them has Rogue & Co. extremely excited. “Some may have heard ‘Electro-Socket Blues’ from the Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist soundtrack, but it was never officially released by us otherwise,” Rogue says. “’I Can Die’ was on the B-side of the ‘Lake Michigan’ single 45 in Europe, for those who were able to grab one of the small handful that were printed. I never got one. ‘The Show’ was never released at all but it features some of the best lyrics of any of the songs from that period.”

Rogue continues: “We had been asked to record ‘All You Need is Love’ for a TV commercial. The version we originally did was a note-for-note copy of the way The Beatles did it. It was pretty uninspired and was, of course, rejected. Feeding off the rejection, we decided to try the song our own way. Or maybe we recorded it the way we thought the Beatles would have played it if they had still been a live touring band when they made the song. Who knows. Either way, the song felt like it had become our own, and we took those all-too-common feelings of rejection and let them mutate into something infused with gratitude and curiosity.”

10 years on, Asleep At Heaven’s Gate remains an album about hopes and fears, triumphs and tragedies, sadness and joy. Filled with darkness and light swirled together, the album is a stirring sonic reminder of the dualities that make life such an unforgettable and incomparable ride.

Nappa, an independent producer and Executive Director at ex’treme Institute in St. Louis; Ken Page, a native St. Louisan and Broadway performer; Endalyn Taylor, Assistant Professor at University of Illinois, Broadway performer, and former principal dancer with Dance Theatre of Harlem; Denise Thimes, a native St. Louisan, Jazz Vocalist and Recording Artist.  Students will be judged on technical ability, stage presence, interpretation and originality.

Tony Parise, Broadway actor, dancer, director, choreographer and St. Louis native, returns for his 8th year to write the script and direct the finals. "I can't believe that this is our 8th year!” enthused Parise.  “The talent of St. Louis teens never ceases to amaze me, and it is always an honor to help guide them on their path to performing on the Fabulous Fox Stage!"  Parise will be working with choreographer Yvonne Meyer Hare (also a St. Louis native) to prepare the final acts to compete in front of a live audience at The Fox. Finalists include a variety of singers, musicians, dancers, baton twirler, juggler and musical theatre performer.

The FPACF reintroduced the St. Louis Teen Talent Competition in 2011 to showcase the St. Louis region’s most talented teens in the performing arts.  The 2017 winner was Christina Jones, a singer from O’Fallon Township High School.  Jones, now a senior and currently a contestant on American Idol, will return for a special performance on April 28th.

Miano.tv produces videos of the competition process which will be available early April on our YouTube and SchoolTube channels.  Highlights and winning performances from the 2011 through 2017 events are currently posted and provide viewers a glimpse of what the competition is all about.

The community response to this FREE event has been amazing and grown over the past seven years with “sold out” crowds at The Fox.  Additionally, each year 120,000+ viewers have watched the Nine Network’s program on the competition.   We are pleased that The Nine Network will once again broadcast an hour-long program on the 2018 competition.

PLEASE NOTE:  All seating is general admission. There is a limit of 10 tickets per transaction. Seating is first-come-first-seated and is not guaranteed.  The theater will be over-sold to ensure a full house.  Please arrive early.

Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation fosters, promotes, and encourages young people in the St. Louis region to discover and participate in the joy and wonder of live performances.

In addition to the St. Louis Teen Talent Competition, the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation also produces a variety of other performing arts programs that focus on youth including Kids’ Night at the Fabulous Fox, Broadway Master Classes, Educational Encores, and is a producing partner of the 2nd Annual St. Louis High School Musical Theatre Awards.

MOTHICA
RELEASES NEW SINGLE

"WATER ME DOWN"
STREAM: Spotify | Apple Music | Amazon Music I SoundCloud
Featured on 'Ashes' EP Out May 2018

Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Mothica, has stood as a trailblazing figure in the Dark Pop genre. Beginning with her debut EP 'Mythic' in 2015, Mothica  has been awarded over 60 million streams, 800K monthly listeners on Spotify, and support from outlets including The FADER, Earmilk, Bullett, Pigeons and Planes, Indie Shuffle,  MILK, and many more.

Now, in preparation for an upcoming EP titled 'Ashes' out in May 2018, the singer-songwriter is ready to reveal the next cut from the project on new single "Water Me Down." Picking up right where her 2017 EP 'Heavy Heart' left off, "Water Me Down" hears the singer delve into familiar territory on a pop / electronic cross over single. Delivering a poignant vocal performance, Mothica showcases an impressive set of vocal chops that fluctuates from nuanced singing techniques to room commanding crescendos on the song's chorus. Adding another ballad to her discography, for Mothica, "Water Me Down" serves as a retrospective on past relationships:

"Water Me Down is written about refusing to dilute your personality to please someone else, even if it’s perceived as ‘too intense.’ I’ve been in relationships that felt like the other person wanted me to be more polite, quiet or moldable. When I was whiskey, they were water. But I’ve always gone into things with one hundred percent of myself or absolute zero. There’s no in-between."
-MOTHICA

If unfamiliar with Mothica, real name McKenzie Ellis, before now, the singer first emerged back in 2014 with debut EP, 'Mythic.' The full-length project put Ellis on the map and established the fast-paced trajectory the vocalist has been nurturing ever since. Originally hailing from Oklahoma, Ellis has thrived as a figurehead of the underground circuit thanks to a series of lives shows across the nation including SXSW,  and appearances on several collaborations with artists including Elénne, Icarus Moth, Diversa, Gladiator, Pusher, and more.

MARIAN HILL DROPS NEW SONG “WISH YOU WOULD”

SOPHOMORE ALBUM UNUSUAL OUT MAY 11th

Photography by Shervin Lainez

Recently, platinum-certified duo Marian Hill dropped their latest track, “Wish You Would,” off of Unusual. Listen to “Wish You Would” here.

Of the song, Marian Hill says, "'Wish You Would' is all about tension. The chord progression oscillates between two chords a half step apart, never quite resolving, and the lyrics are all about wishing something could happen while knowing it cannot. You want someone, but they're unavailable. And you're actually unavailable as well. But sometimes that only makes the wanting more powerful. 'Wish You Would' hangs perpetually in that state of almost, and the sneaky sweetness that comes with it."

Marian Hill debuted a short episode for “Wish You Would,” which is the fifth of ten one-minute visual episodes the duo conceptualized for each song off the upcoming album—watch it here. “Wish You Would” follows previously-released tracks, “Differently” and “Subtle Thing.” "Differently" was produced by Marian Hill and notable Canadian producer, Boi-1da (Drake, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, Lana Del Rey).
