About Rocky & The Wranglers:
When Barbara Carr received her Lifetime Achievement Award from the Blues Society, Roy St. John accepted on her behalf. While Roy was playing pubs in England and recording for Virgin Records, Barbara was playing with the Oliver Sain Revue in St. Louis and recording for Chess Records in Chicago. Their paths crossed when Roy interviewed Barbara on his award-winning morning radio show and they hit it off musically – and soon became the best of friends, with Barbara joining Oliver Sain and Johnnie Johnson at Roy’s memorable Mardi Gras benefits. This year, Barbara will be honored by the National Blues Museum.
Barbara Carr began singing with her sisters in St. Louis and eventually replaced Fontella Bass in Oliver Sain’s Revue, later building a solid and haunting backlog of soulful recordings from various labels before forming her own label and accepting annual tours of Europe. Barbara is currently recording a new album with Roy Roberts in South Carolina, where Barbara continues to entertain huge audiences at festivals. Roy St. John’s new album Rocky & the Wranglers – named for his St. Louis band – combines Blues, R&B, and Americana, garnering British reviews of enviable comparisons with Randy Newman and John Hiatt. He left England in the 80s and was soon hosting and producing a daily morning radio show in St. Louis, where he met Barbara. Recently, they agreed to extend their occasional duets to a full-scale program of individual songs and duets backed by Roy’s crack band of seasoned musicians. Barbara Carr, Roy St. John, and Rocky & the Wranglers are a five-piece blues band.
