This Wednesday, June 20th classical pianist Chia-Ying Chan will be celebrating her debut CD release concert at the Community Center for the Arts in Urbana, Illinois. The music starts at 7:30 pm. Bio:

Chia-Ying Chan, originally from Taiwan, brings passion, vibrancy, sensitivity and creativity to her interpretations of classical music. She is an active soloist and chamber pianist, who has given solo performances and recitals across Taiwan, America and Europe, including at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Austurias (Spain); the Sala dei Notari (Italy); National Recital Hall (Taiwan); Carnegie Weill Hall (New York), and has been invited to perform at the Wiener Saal Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

Chan has won top prizes in international competitions such as the 2018 American Prize (Third Prize), the 2017 Sinfonia da Camera Concerto Competition (Winner), the 2016 International Music Competition Salzburg Grand Prize (Frist Prize), 2016 American Fine Arts International Concerto Competition (First Place), the 2014 West Virginia University Keyboard competition (First Prize), 2014 American Protégé International Competition of Romantic Music (First Place), and the National University of Tainan (NUTN) Concerto Competition in Taiwan (Winner). Her accomplishments led her to a live broadcast performance at Schubertiade in Chicago in 2017, a solo recital at the PianoForte Foundation in Chicago in 2016, Carnegie Weill Recital Hall performances in 2014 and 2015. Her past orchestra performances are included such as Sinfonia da Camera conducted by Ian Hobson in 2017, and Kostroma Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pavel Gershtein in Russia in 2016. She made her orchestral debut with the National University of Tainan Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 1 in 2006, and received an Exceptional Merit Award from NUTN in 2007. Her most recent review from The News-Gazette by John Frayne stated that:“…..Chan impressed me with her fluent technique and urgent phrasing, and she interacted expertly with the well-performed and -conducted accompaniment of the Sinfonia [in Beethoven]…..”. In addition, a review from The American Prize praised Chan’s, “Beautiful sweeping musical gestures and clarity of finger articulation along with thoughtful pedaling,” when reviewing her performance of Ravel and went on to state that, “[Her] performance presents intertwined melodies and heartfelt emotions,” in her Brahms performance.

She has been selected and invited to attend masterclasses and festivals with world-renowned masters such as Robert McDonald, Alberto Nose, Christopher Taylor, John Perry, Peter Takács, Julian Martin, Jose Ramon Mendez, Vladimir Feltsman, Vladimir Ovchinnikov, John O’Connor and others. Chan has been awarded scholarships for study at universities and festivals throughout the US, Taiwan, and Europe.

Her debut album is released by Centaur Records on April 6th 2018, and it includes works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Irving Fine. Chan chose to bring together this selection of repertoire based on her observation of common features and possible links among the pieces that connect them with Beethoven and his legacy, which is a theme she discussed in a lecture recital at National Tainan University in Tainan.

In addition to performing solo piano works, Chan has been an active collaborator in both chamber and accompanist settings. Her repertoire encompasses a wide range of works including composers from the baroque to the present. She is currently the member of Amosa Duo with clarinetist Gary June and devoted to bringing the best of the vast clarinet and piano repertoire to the concert stage. Engagements include performances and recitals in Chicago, several universities throughout the United States, and in many prominent concert halls in Taiwanese tour. This summer, Amosa Duo is going to join Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan as faculty, where they are going to provide recital at Dave Myers Performance Studio at Blue Lake Public Radio.

Chan received her Doctoral degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, where she is currently pursuing an artist- diploma and serving as the piano teaching assistant. Her DMA dissertation focused on the piano works composed by American composer Harold Shapero. Additional appointments include piano faculty at Community Center for the Arts, and instructor at Discover Melody—an international online-conservatory based out of New York, Beijing and Vancouver. She also serves as Vice-director and adjudicator at Chambana Music Competition. Her principal mentors including Timothy Ehlen at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for Doctor of Musical Arts and Artist Diploma; Paul Schenly & Kathryn Brown at Cleveland Institute of Music for Master of Music; and Ching-Jen Wu at National University of Tainan, Taiwan for Bachelor of Music.

Make Music Day STL is set to take place on Thursday, June 22nd. It's origin comes from France and it is now being celebrated all over. It came to St. Louis in 2016 and tripled in size of performers and venues in 2017. It is not a traditional festival and is considered to be inclusive. MAKE MUSIC DAY is an annual city-wide celebration of music that takes place on the summer solstice, June 21.

The Delmar Loop will be celebrating by having live music outdoors at 30+ businesses along Delmar.

This music festival first began in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique,

and is now held on the same day in more than 700 cities in 120 countries around the world.

Make Music is not a typical music festival. It is open to anyone who wants to take part. Every kind of musician

– young, old, amateur or professional, and of every musical persuasion will be heard all over St. Louis sharing their music.

University City Dedicates the First Weekend of Summer to Celebrating the Arts with the Loop Arts Festival

The Loop Arts Festival is back by popular demand

According to Americans for the Arts, “Arts organizations are an important resource in our path to building stronger connections. Opportunities for more even-footed conversation among groups lead to insight and a shared sense of community, and in turn lay the groundwork for exploration about how to maintain vital cultural and community traditions.”

The Delmar Loop in University City is kicking off summer by dedicating the first weekend of summer to a citywide celebration of the arts with the Loop Arts Festival. This event will provide a way for attendees to engage and support University City’s diverse and artistic community. This family-friendly summer festival takes place on one of St. Louis’ most prominent streets and is for all ages to enjoy. Attendees can spend the first days of summer enjoying dance, spoken word, music and culinary events.

With Pianos in The Loop being held throughout the month of June, Make Music Day will officially kick-off the festival and the summer solstice on Thursday, June 21 with a free and open concert of local musicians from all levels. Then, on Friday, June 22, the festival will feature the Celebration of Literary and Visual Arts with sidewalk demos and an art and literary walk from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. To beat the end of weekend blues, Chalk The Loop will be on Saturday, June 23, where professional artists and beginners alike are welcome to chalk up a masterpiece of their own design in Ackert Walkway next to Chuck Berry Plaza. Prizes for Chalk The Loop will range from $50 - $150 and be awarded to participants from three different categories. Young artists, children ages 12 and under, can register for the Chalkland Kids Zone to experience a world of sidewalk chalking, face painting and crafting. Festival goers can also find themselves at a culinary event in the Farmers Market from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Devon Allman Project

BIOGRAPHY

When you’re part of a musical dynasty, it’s only natural that the personal and professional aspects of your life should intersect. It was no different for Devon Allman, whose late father Gregg Allman helped helm one of the most important and influential American bands of the past 50 years. It’s also little wonder that the younger Allman, an accomplished singer, songwriter and guitarist in his own right, should feel the tug of family responsibility and the desire to honor his father’s fabled legacy.

It was also only natural that following his father’s passing on May 27, 2017, Devon would take time to grieve his loss, be with his family and consider his own plans going forward. After all, he had been on the road continuously for twelve years, playing an average of 250 dates a year. Consequently he took six months off to rally around his loved ones and “rack up more time with my kid,” as he put it. That included monthly visits to see relatives on the West Coast and taking the time to heal and rearm himself with the impetus and inspiration needed to embark upon the next phase of his career.

“It felt good to take that time off,” Devon says in retrospect. “I needed to step back and make up for lost time with the people that are close to me.”

Even so, he didn’t neglect music entirely. On December 8, 2017, on what would have been Gregg Allman’s 70th birthday, Devon and a group of special friends celebrated the elder Allman’s life and music with a special concert at the iconic Fillmore in San Francisco. An incredible array of artists took part — Robert Randolph, brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson, G Love, members of Phish, Samantha Fish, and Jimmy Hall, among them.

“It was a magical evening,” Devon recalls. “It was like a family gathering. There was so much great music, so many musicians who had such respect for my father, all of whom felt such a personal connection to both the man and his music. And when my manager told me that we could do the concert at the Fillmore, a place that obviously had such profound ties to my dad’s career, I couldn’t have been happier.”

The show also rekindled his enthusiasm for several projects he’s planning for 2018. In March his new six-piece band, The Devon Allman Project, will launch a world tour with special guest Duane Betts, the son of Allman Brothers co-founder Dickey Betts. The two men have known each since 1989 when Devon was 17 and Duane was 12. “We’ve had this enduring friendship ever since we were kids,” Devon muses. “We’ve always talked about going out on tour together, and now the time seems right. He’ll start the show, then I’ll do my portion and finally the two of us will share the stage for the encore.”

Devon Allman is a staunch proponent of authentic Southern Blues. It’s a legacy that’s always weighed heavy on his musical mantra. He’s chalked up a lengthy list of accomplishments that have entitled him to take his own place in the Southern Rock pantheon. Lilly Hiatt has been nominated for “Emerging Act Of The Year” for the Americana Music Association’s 17th Annual 2018 Honors & Awards taking place September 12th, 2018 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. The nomination follows the release of Hiatt’s Trinity Lane which received widespread critical acclaim and appeared on many 2017 year end lists by NPR Music, Rolling Stone, Paste, and more. NPR Music called the album “courageous and affecting,” with Rolling Stone Country stating it was, “...the most cohesive and declarative statement of the young songwriter’s career.” Mother Jones commented, “While the sound of Trinity Lane encompasses everything from brooding garage rockers to jangly country-tinged laments to sentimental ballads, Hiatt’s commanding presence and eloquent songs tie everything together,” while PopMatters raved, "You’d have to be out of your skull not to appreciate her talents.” Rolling Stone Country recently premiered her new video for “Records,” the centerpiece from Trinity Lane. Her love letter to records, the video was shot while she was on tour supporting the Drive-By Truckers and features Hiatt and her band shopping at Easy Street Records in Seattle, WA as well as Hiatt dancing to her favorite albums at home. Hiatt said to Rolling Stone Country, “We’ve spent the last year on the road, rocking everything from A Tribe Called Quest to The Basement Tapes in the van. Everyone in my band spent years in our rooms with headphones on, exploring anything we could get our hands on. Our love of music is what brought us together. I look at records as dear friends I can count on.” While speaking to the publication last year, Hiatt said, “Music has saved my soul, and I think it’s saved a lot of people’s souls. It’s connected me in a deeper way than anything else really can, where it’s like, I can hear a Lightnin’ Hopkins song and relate to it. I can hear a Liz Phair song and relate to it, and I can hear a Loretta Lynn song and relate to it. Those are all really different people, but we’ve all felt the same things, and that’s really empowering. Not to be morose about it, but if it weren’t for that, I don’t think I’d be here.”

Hiatt currently wrapped up her first European headline tour where she received overwhelming critical praise. She launched a US tour supporting labelmate Justin Townes Earle last night and is also set for her Grand Ole Opry debut in her hometown of Nashville, TN on June 26th. Hiatt is confirmed to appear at the Ohana Festival on September 29th alongside Eddie Vedder, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Johnny Marr, Liz Phair and more. She has also been announced to appear at the Pilgrimage Music Festival, Bristol Rhythm & Roots, Hillside Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest, Winnipeg Folk Fest, and more as well as additional support dates with John Prine, and Amanda Shires. Her love of the ‘90s alt-rock she was raised on shines through on Trinity Lane in the distressed guitars and urgent backbeats. She cites the Pixies, Breeders, Dinosaur Jr., and her favorite, Pearl Jam as influences, but there is also something distinctly Americana lurking in the songs. After moving out of an ex’s house, Hiatt settled into a new apartment off of Trinity Lane in her East Nashville neighborhood and went on tour with friend John Moreland to the West Coast and back. The intensely personal, autobiographical album was written largely upon her return, in isolation, facing the issues she escaped while on the road. Hiatt says, "Love will take you to the darkest places but also the most honest places if you let it. Learning how to love myself is something I’ve always been lousy with, and I spent some time on that. I thought about my sobriety, what that means to me, the struggles I’d had throughout the years, since I was a 27-year-old and hung up my toxic drinking habit. I thought about my mother, who took her own life when I was a baby, not far from my age at 30 years old, and I related to her more than ever. As you can see, there was plenty of time spent on my own. I didn’t talk to that many folks, albeit a few close friends, and leaned into my family. I stayed away from men, and danced alone in the evenings, looking out my window observing my humble and lively neighborhood. I found power in being by myself. I found peace in the people I was surrounded with - we didn’t really know one another, but we smiled when passed on the street. One time I almost rear-ended an older woman in her car backing out of my driveway and I said, ‘Oh man, I’m just not used to any cars coming around this bend. She replied, ‘This is our little hideout, baby,’ And it really was."
